Neutrals is a percussion duo based in Dayton, OH. Formed in 2016 by Evan Miller and Andrew Seivert, the duo combines their Rust Belt underground upbringings and classical training into a contemporary ensemble firmly grounded by their Midwestern roots. Equal parts written works and electroacoustic improvisation, Neutrals performs established percussion duo repertoire, drone-based sound explorations, and above all, commissioned works by living composers. Past and current collaborators include composers Rob Funkhouser, Nate May, Hugh Sheehan, and Brooks Frederickson, percussionist Aaron Michael Butler, Cincinnati experimental ensemble Knee Play, and Indianapolis-based production company NoExit Performance.
Evan Miller is a percussionist based in Dayton, OH. His interests lie in performing the wide range of contemporary solo and chamber music for percussion, as well as experimental performance and noise.
As a classical musician, Evan is a avid chamber player, dedicated to performing both established repertoire and collaborating with composers for new works. Notable recent performances include the 2016 Percussive Arts Society International Convention (with the Wright State University Percussion Ensemble), a performance of Aaron Siegel's Science Is Only A Sometimes Friend at the 2017 Nelsonville Music Festival, a summer tour performing Steve Reich's Four Organs and Julius Eastman's Gay Guerilla (with Aaron Michael Butler, Andrew Seivert, and Knee Play), and a solo commissions recital featuring new works by Dave Molk, Thomas Rex Beverly, and Nicole Gutman. He has also performed in clinics/masterclass for Robert Van Sice, So Percussion, Tim Feeney, Doug Perkins, Gwen Dease, Mobius Percussion, and James Culley, and has attended the So Percussion Summer Institute and the Chosen Vale International Percussion Seminar.
In his solo work, Evan works with friction techniques, tape loops, and field recordings to manipulate acoustic instruments for long-form sounds and drones. Recent performance venues include Dreamland (Louisville), The Mockbee (Cincinnati), and The Spot (Lafayette, IN).
Evan is currently studying an undergraduate degree in percussion performance at Wright State University (Dayton, OH) with Gerald Noble, and an undergraduate certificate in arts management.
Andrew Seivert is a Percussionist, Teacher, and Composer based in Dayton OH.
Andrew is currently finishing his Bachelor of Music Performance in Percussion at Wright State University. There he is a member of the Wright State University Percussion Studio, performing works by various composers like Reich, Xenakis, Cage, and Lansky. He has performed in notable ensemble performances, including being a featured soloist at the Ohio Music Education Association Conference in 2016, and at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention in 2016. Solo performances include performing as a finalist in The Masterworks Honor Recital 2015, and the Wright State University Young Artists Competition 2017.
Andrew is a founding member of Neutrals, a percussion duo based in Dayton OH. Neutrals performs contemporary percussion and electronic music throughout the region including OH, Mi, IN, and KY.
Currently he teaches at Brookville City Schools, where he serves as the Assistant Director of Bands, and Director of Percussion.
He has written music for solo and chamber percussion, and currently writes and arranges music for marching band, and indoor percussion. Andrew received the Charles R. Spinney Music Composition Award in 2015.
